The marketing rules for your business’s messaging—set by some ambiguous figure from your industry’s past—are bendable, breakable, and discardable.

That’s right. I’m telling you to take that script that was handed to you by your industry predecessors, acknowledge it, then crumple it up and throw it in the trash. It’s time to come up with a message that is unique to you.

It’s time to be a Script Rebel.

Why Be a Script Rebel?

Being the same as everyone else never brought anyone market share.

The overall marketing messages in each of our respective industries were likely written by someone decades ago who knew what they were talking about. What they said made sense and seemed to resonate with customers, so everyone in the industry since then has duplicated it, recycled it, or put their own spin on it.

I get it. It’s easier to play it safe and market alongside what’s been done and worked before. Doing something different can be scary. Maybe you are afraid of wasting money on expensive video marketing campaigns, of getting the messaging “wrong,” or having the campaign’s creativity bring scrutiny to your business (hello Pepsi and Kendall Jenner!).

It’s risky, but the payout is a game-changer.

You have to go off script and be a Script Rebel to really communicate your value. YOUR script should tell a story, one that proves to your potential customers that you understand their problems. That you have the answer they are looking for, and that with your differentiators and unique processes, they can be a success. This is the type of script that will be different than everyone else’s and will make you stand out. This type of script makes you a Script Rebel.

How to be a Script Rebel

Video marketing is still a newer strategy that few brands are leveraging in their marketing plans. Granted, it has become easier and less expensive to make, but it’s still missing some key components: brand attitude, value, and uniqueness.

It’s important to note that your messaging should be geared toward your target market. Not everyone in the whole world. It’s not possible to be all things to everyone. You only need to be THE thing for the people who need you the most.

Ready to stand out? Here’s how we recommend you get started:

  • Know the value your product or service brings to your customers and stand proudly behind it
  • Identify a unique perspective/brand voice that draws on your experience and your company’s core values
  • Listen to what your peers are saying, but don’t let it sway you. Let it inspire you to say it different and better
  • Mine through your Frequently Asked Questions to figure out what your potential customers want to know
  • Write your script to answer these questions using the words your audience is using
